Unfortunately, the serial number placement is sporadic and many ID numbers over lap between years and models. In many instances, there is no exact known date for a specific guitar. That is why I decided to write this article.

Most gear has a serial number, either printed on a label inside it or stamped into the headstock or neck plate. Use our dating guides below to figure out when your instrument was made and where it came from.

The ES was introduced in Gibson hired Ted McCarty in , who became President in He led an expansion of the guitar line with new guitars such as the “Les Paul” guitar introduced in and designed by Les Paul , a popular musician in the s and also a pioneer in music technology. Later, a shorter neck was added. Similar in size to the hollow-body Thinlines, the ES family had a solid center, giving the string tone a longer sustain.
